Deven Alves Scores Hat Trick Against Penn Yan In Home opener

The Canandaigua boys lacrosse team was smarting after last Friday’s last-second loss to Orchard Park in the driving rain.

There was no better way of getting over that defeat than to take out those frustrations on the visiting Penn Yan Mustangs Thursday evening. Behind sharp offensive play and solid defense led by senior Evan Burley and junior goalie Nick King, the Braves beat their Finger Lakes League rivals 15-5.

Junior Deven Alves Led both teams in scoring with a natural “hat trick” in the first half, and capped one more goal in the second half, while senior Tanner Scharr chipped in three more.

The Mustangs started the scoring just a minute into the game when Adam Trombley found Cole Castle up field on a clear. Less than two minutes later The Braves scored the first of five in a row, when Devin Alves scored on a feed from Bryan Peck on a cut from the left side of the cage.Alves scored again with just over a minute left in the quarter on a back to front feed from Brain Scheetz. The Braves led at the end of the first quarter 2-1.

But, it was Deven Alves again at the top of the second quarter as the Braves scored three goals while holding the Mustangs scoreless. After a ball bounced off a defender on the crease a number of players ended up on the ground.

When the ball popped out, Alves scooped it up and put in the net. Canandaigua maintained control of the ball for the majority of the quarter and took time off the clock with slow, methodical play set-ups. Will Johnson scored a man up goal at 9:23 when after cutting to the crease he received the ball from Scheetz. At 7:13 Marshall Johnson scored an unassisted goal on a drive from the top of the box. The Braves led at half time 5-1.

At one point, senior goalie Ethan Kamholtz ran the ball to his offensive end simply because no one broke open for his outlet pass.

The Mustangs came back with two goals to start the second half. Castle scored on a quick feed from Matt Osgood in the first minute of the third quarter taking the score to 5-2. Osgood scored an unassisted goal on an a-cut drive from behind the net to take the score to 5-3, but that was the end of the run as the Braves scored the next five goals, all within a three and a half minute period to take the score to 10-3 with 4:23 left.

Canandaigua also controlled the face off stats, winning 17 of 24 and giving the braves a significant amount of ball time as the result.

Penn Yan closed out the third quarter with a goal by Nate Nichols, who received the ball after cutting to the crease and connecting with Osgood. The quarter ended twenty seconds later with CA up 10-4.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter Canandaigua scored three more, all within a forty-eight second period. Tanner Scharr started it off with quick cross-crease pass from Will Johnson. Brian Scheetz added an unassisted goal after intercepting a clearing pass and shooting on an open net from the top of the box and Alves added the third on a drive from behind the net. Adam Trombley scored the last goal for Penn Yan in man up with 4:36 remaining, but CA countered on the ensuing face off (Adam Knapton from Marshall Johnson), and then scored the final goal on the next face off when Brandon Thomson scored at 3:49.

In the final analysis, Canandaigua controlled the ball on both ends of the field. Their player depth allowed for more match ups and a number of mismatches, they used eleven different players on the offensive book and their pressure on rides frustrated Penn Yan.

Scoring for Canandaigua were Game leading scorer Deven Alves (4g-1a), Brian Scheetz (1g-3a), Bryan Peck (1a), Will Johnson (1g-1a), Marshall Johnson (1g-1a), Tom LaCrosse (2g), Brandon Thomson (2g), Tanner Scharr (3g), Collin Peck (1a) and Adam napton (1g).
