That, as things turned out, was a very good idea.
In 2008 the Canandaigua High School lacrosse team wasn't just an unbeaten sectional champion, the Braves were also award winners, in an unorthodox sense.
"I Love This Town," with a music bed from Bon Jovi, was
the team's 2008 postseason video. It was voted the best of its kind.
"There is no lacrosse in the video," said head coach Ed Mulheron. "There are no highlights. It's about us winning; our bus rides and other things we do in the off season; in the season; off the field. That really makes it special."
It was the work of junior varsity coach Deven York. "I just thought for the competition, try something different," said York. "I figured everybody would go in with lacrosse, so we went the other way and went community."
A championship Section Five lacrosse team's end of the year highlight video, contained no lacrosse highlights.
Capping A Highlight Season
"It had to be a winner," said booster club president Dan Knapton. "It was just a reflection of the support the Canandaigua community gives the team. I don't know how they could've not chosen us."
The award winning video is paying dividends in 2009. New Balance sportswear will donate some sixty thousand dollars worth of lacrosse equipment to the team. As another part of the prize, it is paying to produce a ten part documentary on the guys.
"The first couple of days I was a little nervous," said senior Brian Scheetz, "but as its's going on, I'm getting more comfortable with the cameras."
"There is no doubt one of our concerns is how we deal with this," said coach Mulheron. "We need to understand that this is a very nice experience. It's good stuff, but in reality, it doesn't score us a goal. It doesn't defend anybody."
"We've just got to make sure that we understand that and bring a work ethic everyday to practice and treat it as though they're not here. Just try to be us."
The video can be seen on 'newbalance.com.' It is the same site the documentary will be made available. The first part should be ready next week.
