New Duds, New Gear & Internet Fame!

The Canandaigua Lacrosse team received their shipment of New Balence Lacrosse equipment yesterday

Representatives from the athletic gear company New Balance will be at Canandaigua Academy tomorrow, sizing members of the boys varsity lacrosse team for new equipment.

The athletic outfitter will donate $60,000 worth of game and practice jerseys, cleats, helmets, gloves and pads to the team after it won a contest to become the centerpiece of the company’s first-ever “Season in the Balance” Web series.

Camera crews will follow the team around and post 10 weekly “web-isodes” — with the first one appearing online on March 16 —

covering practices, games and portions of the players’ off-the-field lives.

“It’s really pretty spectacular for our team,” said Canandaigua City School District spokesperson Andy Thomas.

Coach Ed Mulheron first heard the news over a week ago. “It’s a pretty neat thing,” he said.

Thomas said the district and lacrosse community couldn’t be more excited. But, he said, there are some concerns about high school athletes being used for marketing and advertising on the Web.

“It’s clearly a marketing/advertising vehicle,” he said. “They have told us that the documentary is not going to be shot with that in mind. It’s supposed to be a stand-alone documentary of the Braves lacrosse season.”

The district recently sent out a media release form to the parents of team members, explaining the series and intentions of both the district and the company.

“We have made it clear to parents that student-athletes won’t be penalized if (parents) don’t want to sign,” Thomas said.

Thomas also said the district will have an opportunity to see each web-isode one week before it’s posted online.

“If we see something that we’re really, really, really not comfortable with, we’re going to do our best to stop it,” he added.
