The latest chapter in what at times over the years has been an intense rivalry on the lacrosse field turned into a lopsided affair on Tuesday evening.
At Evans Field, Canandaigua scored five goals in each of the first three quarters, and the Braves went on to beat Geneva 17-5 in the Finger Lakes Division I boys game.
With Canandaigua moving to Monroe County in all sports next fall, this is the last season the two squads will meet in Finger Lakes League competition. And it was the Braves flexing their muscles at home.
Devin Alves had the hottest hand for CA (5-0 in the league, 6-2 overall), netting five goals,
while Brian Scheetz handed out six assists. Tom LaCrosse and Brandon Thomson added three goals each, Tanner Scharr had two and Marshall Johnson, Will Johnson, Bryan Peck and Eric Schott had one each.
“Our kids controlled the ball and played well, but I was very impressed with the way the Geneva kids played,” said CA coach Ed Mulheron.
“They never quit and kept playing hard the entire game.”
Nick King started in goal for the Braves, making five saves in 27 minutes. He was replaced by Anthony DeLeo, who made four saves in the next 14 minutes. LaShawn Williams made two saves over the final seven minutes.
Scoring a goal each for Geneva (1-1, 1-5) were Will Brennan, Frank Triana, Chris Tapscott, Billy Eddington and Mike Warner. Ross Dinan and Billy Craft combined to make seven saves in the nets.
