Now The Braves Can Look Ahead
It’s every coach’s mantra — don’t look ahead; play one game at a time.
The Canandaigua Braves did that early this week in preparation for their non-league boys lacrosse game Wednesday against McQuaid.
But they surely must have known that after facing the Knights, a trip to Corning was in the offing for Friday and a crack at Corning East, the state’s No. 3-ranked Class B team.
Still, the Braves took care of business on Wednesday, exploding out of the locker room with eight first-quarter goals en route to an 18-7 win.
“We came out and played really well right from the very beginning,” said CA coach Ed Mulheron, whose team is ranked 14th in the state in Class B. “It was great to be up 8-1 as early as we were.
We got a lot of kids involved in the scoring and we are always happy to see that.”
The Braves led 11-4 at the half and now can look forward
to 5-0 Corning East as 13 different players scored.
Led by Brandon
Thomson with four goals, Tom LaCrosse with three and two assists and Deven Alves
with two and an assist. All three are juniors.
Another junior, Collin Peck, agreed with Mulheron.
“We knew McQuaid was going to be tough, so we came out ready and played real good team ball right from the beginning,” said Peck, who left his mark on the game with two goals. “Everybody got a taste of the game today.
“Our team has a lot of depth,” said his twin brother, Bryan Peck. “All our players can hang with the best.
“Our defense is as strong as any defense around. Combine that with having three goalies who can play the game at any time and teams will see what I mean when I say we have depth."
Thomson had another way to describe what he sees in his team.
“Team chemistry” was his first response when asked what is fueling the Braves. “Most of us have been together since the second grade and we know what each other is going to do. When we move the ball, we know how to get people involved. Our defense is really strong and they don’t let anybody take them one-on-one.”
Canandaigua (2-1 overall) played all three of its goalies in the game. Junior Nick King started and made two saves. Senior Anthony DeLeo played the middle quarters and made five saves while junior LaShawn Williams wrapped it up, making one save in the last quarter.
Junior Alex Pautler led McQuaid (1-5) with two goals. Freshman goalie Pat Sheridan made one save in the first quarter before being replaced by sophomore Ethan Matteson who made nine saves.
So McQuaid is done, and the Braves can look forward to their trip to the Southern Tier. It’s a game they have been waiting for against a marquee opponent since a tough battle in typhoon-like conditions at Orchard Park to start the season off three weeks ago.
“We all played really well tonight,” concluded Thomson. “What better type of a game for us to have played before heading to Corning East Friday.”
His coach agreed.
“I really don’t think we could have played a better game
for getting ready for what is ahead of us on Friday,” Mulheron said.
