The Canandaigua boys lacrosse team kicked off its 2009
season with a rematch of last season’s Western Regional— a game the Braves won
11-5—but Friday’s result was a little different.
Orchard Park (Section 6) got a late game-winner from
senior All-American Jeff Tundo as time expired, upending the visitors 5-4 to
avenge last year’s loss.
Both teams muscled through outlandish
conditions, monsoon-like winds and a driving rain, and despite the loss CA (0-1
overall) coach Ed Mulheron was pleased with the effort.
“I think our kids
played through terrible weather,” he said. “We stayed focused and I’m really
proud of the determination they showed.”
It looked good for the Braves in
the early going as they took advantage of several OP penalties and took a 2-0
lead in the first quarter.
OP answered back when Mike Moran picked up a
ground ball and worked his way near the crease
where he unloaded a shot past junior keeper Nick King.
Tom LaCrosse pushed the lead back to two goals when he delivered a shot over
Quaker goalie Ryan Cole’s left shoulder.
Canandaigua had the only goal in the second quarter when LaCrosse
netted his second of the game and the Braves entered the intermission with a 4-1
lead.
The Quakers came out of the break and took control of the game, scoring four unanswered goals to get the win. Senior middie Kyle Kasprzyk scored first and an adjustment— OP moved Tundo to midfield— allowed Art Marrapesse more freedom and he pulled the host within one with 20 seconds left in the quarter.
Marrapesse scored again with four minutes left in the game to even the game at four and after CA picked up a penalty with under two to play Orchard Park had an opportunity to net the game-winner. Tundo took advantage with 15 seconds to play, pulling up on a drive and launching the ball past King to put the Quakers up 5-4.“He’s a very good player but we defended him well all night,”
Mulheron said. “Even on the game winner we had a hold on him but he made a great play and that’s what great players do.”King finished the game with four saves in the Braves first regular-season loss in two years. “Every year is a new year,” Mulheron explained. “We’ll come back and work harder, we have a tough early schedule but we want to get better as the year goes on.”
